Crowns and Onlays
What is a crown?
A Crown is a restoration that covers the entire tooth to restore it to its normal shape and function. Its purpose is to strengthen or improve the appearance of a tooth. Crowns are used to restore teeth when there is not enough tooth structure remaining due to decay, fractured or root canal treated teeth, or teeth with large failed restorations. Crowns are also used cosmetically to enhance the color and shape of discolored or misshaped teeth.
What is an onlay?
An Onlay is a porcelain or gold piece that covers the biting surface of one or more cusps (peaks of a tooth) when too much tooth structure is lost either due to decay, fractures, or removal of a failed restoration. An onlay is cemented and fits into the tooth like a puzzle piece and can be fabricated to match your natural tooth color.
